Nose Surgeries

Septoplasty

A surgical procedure performed to correct the deformities of the septum, the partition between the two nasal cavities. Septoplasty is performed under general anesthesia to treat deviated septum, long-term sinusitis, abnormal growths in the nasal cavity which blocks the airflow and causes difficulty in breathing. It is also recommended for patients with obstructive sleep apnea or snoring problems when non-surgical treatments aren’t successful. Septoplasty involves an incision on one side of the septum and straightens its bent bone and cartilage. It takes around 30 to 90 minutes to complete the surgery based on the complexity of the condition.

Fess

FESS stands for Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery. It is a minimally invasive technique that helps to restore sinus ventilation and its normal functionality. Fess is recommended as a treatment option for patients who suffer from frequent episodes of acute or chronic sinusitis. It is performed under local anesthesia and takes 2 to 4 hours to complete the surgery.

Turbinoplasty

It is the surgical procedure to reduce the size of the turbinates that are present inside the nose on either side of the septum. A turbinoplasty is used to treat the nasal obstruction due to excessive swelling of the turbinates when other medical treatments fail to relieve the symptoms. Turbinoplasty helps to preserve the normal functioning of the turbinates while increasing the volume of air that passes through the nose for a better breathing process. It is often performed along with a septoplasty or endoscopic sinus surgery. Turbinoplasty requires general anesthesia to eliminate the discomfort during the surgery.

Rhinoplasty

Commonly known as ‘nose job’, rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that helps to improve the appearance of the nose. It can change the size, shape, or proportions of the nose by modifying the bone, cartilage, skin, or all three. Rhinoplasty can be done to correct birth defects, repair deformities from injuries, and treat some breathing difficulties. It can be done either under local or general anesthesia depending on the complexity of the procedure. In general, it takes one to two hours to complete rhinoplasty, but it can take even longer if the procedure is complex.

Fracture Nasal Bone Reduction

It is the surgical procedure performed to treat the fractures of the nasal bones from injuries. The objective of the fractured nasal bone reduction is to restore the position of cartilage and the bones of the nose for the deformities caused by an injury. This procedure decreases the discomfort and maximizes volume for the airflow in the nose and helps patients to breathe well. It can be done under local or general anesthesia based on the complexity of nasal fractures.

Endonasal DCR

Endonasal Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) is a surgical intervention to eliminate the fluid and mucus retention in the lacrimal sac, which serves as a reservoir for the overflow of tears. Endonasal DCR is performed for treating obstructed tear duct to create tear drain between the eyes and nose. If left untreated, a blocked tear duct can cause inflammation or chronic infection in the eyes and nasal cavity. To perform endonasal DCR, most surgeons prefer general anesthesia to completely eliminate the pain during the procedure.

Surgery for OSA

Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) is the common surgery carried to treat OSA. It involves the removal of excess tissue from the soft palate and pharynx to clear the airflow obstruction that causes breathing difficulties during sleep. Besides UPPP, Laser-assisted Uvuloplasty (LAUP) is the surgical procedure recommended for sleep apnea. This procedure involves scarring and tightening of the soft palate and uvula trimming with the use of a laser. Both UPPP & LAUP surgeries are done under general anesthesia.

Balloon Sinuplasty

Balloon sinuplasty is an endoscopic nasal surgery that uses small balloon catheters to drain blocked sinuses. It is used to treat severe rhinosinusitis, sinus inflammation, and nasal blockages. This procedure is minimally invasive which excludes cuts and loss of nasal tissues or bones and is very effective in relieving the symptoms of rhinosinusitis. Balloon sinuplasty requires local anesthesia, but it can also be done under general anesthesia if the patient feels uncomfortable.
